Chapter 1: The Journey Begins

“Adventure awaits those who seek it,” I thought as my wife Sitara and I embarked on our 12-day road trip to visit the Mighty 5 National Parks. Our journey began on a crisp morning, the 10th of October, as the first rays of sunlight pierced the sky above our sweet home in Argyle. Our trusty companion for this adventure was our Big Horn Dodge Ram truck, loaded to the brim with all the essentials one might need for such a grand expedition: a beautiful orange tent, backpacks, trekking equipment, coolers, and the excitement of the unknown.

With a sense of wanderlust tugging at our hearts, we revved up the engine and set out at 4 am. Our first stop on this epic road trip was supposed to be Albuquerque, but as the road stretched out before us and the open highway beckoned, we decided to push on a little further. Our first pit stop was at a Costco, where we stocked up on provisions and supplies that would sustain us through the days ahead. After filling up the gas tank, we continued our journey, our destination set for the enchanting landscapes of Sedona, Arizona.

As the hours rolled by and the scenery changed, we found ourselves in Flagstaff around 4 pm. The majestic San Francisco Peaks loomed in the distance, and we couldn’t help but be captivated by the beauty of the terrain. We’d initially planned to make it all the way to our campsite in Sedona that evening, but as the sun dipped below the horizon, we decided it was wiser to stay the night in Flagstaff.

Our resting place for the night was the KOA Flagstaff campsite, a place that offered both comfort and natural beauty. Situated amid the pine forests and surrounded by the serenity of nature, the campsite was a welcome respite. However, the weather had other plans for us that night. Nature, with all its grandeur, decided to remind us of its unpredictable side. We experienced severe wind gusts, reaching up to 50 miles per hour, as we settled into our tent for the night.

The wind howled through the trees, and our trusty orange tent fluttered and folded within itself. It was a challenging night for us, as we had to muster all our strength to ensure the tent didn’t give in to the forces of nature. Several times throughout the night, we found ourselves pushing and propping it up, determined to stay warm and dry.

After an eventful and somewhat restless night at KOA Flagstaff, we woke up the next morning, a bit shaken but still determined. As we prepared to continue our journey, Sitara and I exchanged glances and thoughts. The adventure had just begun, and it was clear that the elements would test our mettle. Second-guessing how the rest of the trip would pan out, we couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. But we knew that such challenges were part and parcel of any grand road trip, and they were what made the experience all the more memorable.

With Flagstaff in our rearview mirror and the promise of more extraordinary sights ahead, we set off on the next leg of our adventure, eager to explore the wonders of the Mighty 5 National Parks. Little did we know that the road ahead would be filled with breathtaking vistas, unexpected encounters, and moments that would etch themselves into our hearts forever. Stay tuned as we share more chapters of our epic journey to the Mighty 5.
